Comprehensive Care for Hip Discomfort

The hip is a weight-bearing joint that absorbs load with almost every step you take, so pain there tends to show up in daily activities first. You may notice stiffness getting out of a car, aching in the groin or outer thigh after a walk, or discomfort that wakes you when you lie on one side. Left unaddressed, most people start avoiding the movements that hurt, and the surrounding muscles weaken as a result.
Because the hip works together with the lower back, pelvis, and knee, pain felt in one area often traces back to another. That is why the evaluation matters more than treating the spot that hurts. At Health and Fitness Professionals, our team works across physical therapy, chiropractic, occupational therapy, acupuncture, and pain management to identify the source of your hip pain and address it from more than one angle.
Common Causes
Your evaluation is the only way to know which of these applies to you.
Gradual wear of the cartilage in the hip joint, often felt as deep groin pain and morning stiffness that eases as you move.
Irritation of the fluid-filled sac on the outside of the hip, commonly producing tenderness over the bone and pain when lying on that side.
Overloaded gluteal or hip flexor tendons, often linked to a change in activity level, that ache with stairs, hills, or standing on one leg.
Damage to the cartilage rim around the socket, which can cause catching, clicking, or a pinching sensation at the front of the hip.
Symptoms felt in the hip that originate in the lower back or sacroiliac joint. Treating only the hip in these cases tends to give short-lived relief.
Strain of the hip flexors, adductors, or glutes after a sudden movement or an increase in training, usually sore to stretch and to contract.

Our approach guides you through a personalized journey toward improved comfort and mobility
We begin with a thorough evaluation to understand the root cause of your hip pain. This includes a review of your medical history, a physical examination of the hip, back, and pelvis, and sometimes diagnostic imaging.

Based on our findings, we create a plan tailored to your specific needs. This may combine physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, occupational therapy, or pain management.
You begin treatment with our multidisciplinary team, with progress monitored closely. We also provide guidance on exercises and daily changes to maintain your progress and reduce future flare-ups.

Common causes include osteoarthritis, bursitis, gluteal or hip flexor tendinopathy, labral tears, and muscle strains. Pain felt in the hip can also be referred from the lower back or sacroiliac joint, which is why the evaluation looks beyond the hip itself.
Recovery time varies with the cause and how long the pain has been present. Your therapist will give you a realistic timeline after the evaluation rather than a generic estimate, and will explain what progress should look like along the way.
New Jersey allows direct access to physical therapy, so in many cases you can book an evaluation without a referral. Some insurance plans still require one for coverage, so call us and we will check your specific plan before your visit.
Complete rest is rarely the answer for a hip. The more useful question is which movements to keep and which to modify while symptoms settle, and that is something we work out with you at the evaluation.
Many people with hip pain are managed without it. Our approach starts with conservative care, and if imaging or your response to treatment suggests you should see a surgeon, we will tell you and help coordinate that step.
Yes. Physical therapy, chiropractic, occupational therapy, acupuncture, and pain management are all under one roof, and your plan can combine the approaches that fit your diagnosis.
