Signs Your Back Needs More Than Rest

Most low back pain comes from the muscles, joints, and discs of the lower spine. See how many of these sound like you.

Recognize two or more? An evaluation can show what is straining your back and which kind of care will help most.

  • Stiffness in your lower back when you first get out of bed
  • Pain that builds after sitting for a long time, like at a desk or in the car

  • Trouble standing up straight after sitting
  • Waking up at night when you roll over

Common Causes of Low Back Pain

Low back pain can start in a muscle, a disc, a joint, or the way you move through your day. Your evaluation tells us which one is driving your pain.

01

Muscle strain

What it feels like
A sudden, sore ache after lifting, twisting, or a busy weekend of yard work, often with tight muscles on one or both sides.
How we help
Gentle hands-on work to calm the muscles, then exercises that rebuild strength so the same strain is less likely to happen again.
02

Disc problems

What it feels like
Deep back pain that can travel into the leg, often worse with sitting, bending forward, coughing, or sneezing.
How we help
Movements and positions that take pressure off the disc, core strengthening, and guidance on how to sit and lift more safely.

03

Spinal stenosis

What it feels like
Aching, heavy, or tired legs when you stand or walk for a while, which often eases when you sit or lean forward.
How we help
Exercises that open up space in the spine, hip and core strengthening, and a walking plan you can build on at your own pace.
04

Arthritis and disc wear

What it feels like
Stiffness that is worst in the morning or after rest, with a dull ache that loosens up once you get moving.
How we help
Joint mobilization to restore motion, plus a steady exercise routine that keeps your spine flexible and your muscles strong.

05

Posture and desk strain

What it feels like
A nagging ache across the low back that builds through the workday and eases when you get up and move around.
How we help
Posture training, desk and car setup tips, and short movement breaks that fit into your day.
06

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain

What it feels like
Pain on one side, just below the belt line, that can flare with stairs, rolling over in bed, or standing on one leg.
How we help
Chiropractic adjustments or joint mobilization, plus strengthening for the hips and core to keep the pelvis steady.

Low Back Pain FAQ

Still have a question? Call us and a member of our team will help.

When should I get my back pain checked?

Book an evaluation if your pain lasts more than a few weeks, keeps you from normal activities, or comes with numbness, tingling, or weakness in your legs.

Should I rest or keep moving?

For most low back pain, gentle movement helps more than bed rest. The key is knowing which movements to keep doing and which to change for now. We work that out with you at your first visit so you are not guessing.

Do I have to get my back adjusted?

No. Adjustments are one option, not a requirement. If you would rather skip them, or they are not a good fit for you, your plan can use gentle mobilization, soft tissue work, exercise, and acupuncture instead.

Can I combine different treatments at your clinic?

Yes. Physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and pain management are all in one building. Your providers talk to each other and build one plan, so you are not juggling separate offices.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept most major plans, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, and we verify your benefits before your first visit. Call (908) 282-3737 and we will check your coverage.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your insurance card, a list of your medications, and any X-rays, MRI reports, or notes from other doctors about your back. Wear comfortable clothes that let you bend and move easily.
