Ease the shooting pain and numbness running down your leg.

Signs Your Leg Pain May Be Sciatica

Sciatica follows the path of the sciatic nerve, from your lower back through your buttock and down the back of your leg. See how many of these sound like you.

Recognize two or more? An evaluation can show what is pressing on the nerve and which treatments are most likely to help.

  • Pain that starts in your lower back or buttock and travels down the back of one leg
  • A burning, electric, or shooting feeling in your leg
  • Numbness or pins and needles in your leg or foot
  • Weakness in your leg or foot, or a foot that feels like it catches when you walk
  • Pain that gets worse after sitting for a while or driving
  • Trouble standing up straight after you get out of a chair
  • A sharp jolt down your leg when you cough or sneeze
  • Symptoms mostly on one side of your body

Common Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The right treatment depends on what is irritating the nerve, so that is the first thing we look for.

01

Herniated or bulging disc

What it feels like
Low back pain with leg pain that often gets worse when you sit, bend forward, cough, or sneeze.
How we help
Movements and positions that take pressure off the disc, core strengthening, and guidance on sitting and lifting.

02

Spinal stenosis

What it feels like
Aching, heavy, or tired legs when you stand or walk, which often eases when you sit down or lean forward.
How we help
Exercises that open up space around the nerves, hip and core strengthening, and a walking plan you can build on.
03

Bone spurs and joint changes

What it feels like
Stiffness in your lower back, especially in the morning, with pain that can spread into your buttock and leg.
How we help
Joint mobilization, chiropractic adjustments where appropriate, and exercises that keep your spine moving well.
04

Tight hip and buttock muscles

What it feels like
Deep pain in the buttock that can travel down your leg, often worse after sitting or climbing stairs.
How we help
Soft tissue work, stretching, and strengthening for the hips so the muscles around the nerve can relax.

Sciatica FAQ

Still have a question? Call us and a member of our team will help.

Should I rest or keep moving when I have sciatica?

Short breaks from what hurts are fine, but long bed rest usually makes stiffness worse. Gentle walking and the right exercises tend to help more. Your therapist will show you which movements are safe for your back and which to avoid for now.

Will I need surgery for sciatica?

Many people with sciatica improve with care like physical therapy and chiropractic treatment. If your evaluation shows signs that need a surgeon or other specialist, we will tell you and help you take that next step.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on what is causing your sciatica and how long you have had it. Some patients feel a change within the first few visits, while others take longer. We track your progress and adjust your plan as you go.

Can I keep sciatica from coming back?

You can lower the odds. We teach you exercises to keep your back and hips strong, plus better ways to sit, lift, and sleep. Knowing what to do at the first sign of a flare-up also helps you stay ahead of it.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept most major plans, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, and we verify your benefits before your first visit. Call (908) 282-3737 and we will check your coverage.
